For a long time it seemed like Twente Cycling was stuck. We could dream the Race of the Minutemen and we had raced in essentially every quasi - suitable race there was to be raced in Divisions 3 and 4. But for a little over a season, Twente Cycling Team has been in Division 2 and on the good side of the result column.
Broad team quality seemed to contribute heavily to the recent succes. Up until 2 seasons ago, there were just 2 riders capable of scoring any points. A bad season for either Jeremy Dooley or Malcolm Waltz would put us into big trouble immediately, especially since Dooley was usually either riding the green fairy or recharging it.
And then Wayne Mihelic arrived. And then Yvan Wayland arrived. Steadily but slowly, Twente Cycling was expanding to a team capable of winning in multiple disciplines. The hillers could support the Climbers. The Climbers could support the hillers and the jobbers can support Dooley in a crushing TT up a freaking mountain.
And then we enquired about Huberto Casald liga, a young Colombian Hill helper, presumably maxed. The seller told us quickly that that was actually not the case. Of course, that put a little premium on his buying price, but it was well worth it. About as season after Huberto first arrived, he has now reached his full potential, becoming our Hill captain for years to come.
Five riders have scored points this season and it is beautiful to watch. In the next weeks, Dooley will have his shot at racing in Porto, a race we have been trying to get in for many seasons. The hillers will, with a near full hill squad, get their opportunity to race elsewhere in the world for more succes.
The climbing team needs some fresh blood though, which outlines a future decision to make for the Twente Management. Edwoud Slagter offers decent potential. What the future will bring is soon to be found out.
